Scouting teaches us to 'walk humbly with thy God'

A Scout is Reverent

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6
The religion of a man is not the creed he professes but his life - what he acts upon, and knows of life, and his duty in it

About this site

·          This site exists to encourage Scouts and adults to pursue the religious emphasis award of their faith. In 2004, 265 awards were presented to Scouts and Scouters from the NE Georgia Council (at all levels).  We are ranked 12th  out of 321 councils nationwide,.

·          This site exists to support the work of Chaplains and Chaplain’s Aides throughout the Etowah district by providing resources, opportunities for discussion, and encouragement.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines reverence as:

·          "Deep respect and veneration for some thing, place, or person regarded as having a sacred or exalted character.”

·          “A profound emotion inspired by a deity (as in "the fear of God").”

·          Synonyms are: fear, awe, veneration.

The Boy Scout Handbook states: "A Scout is reverent; he is reverent toward God.  He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the convictions and beliefs of others in matters of custom and religion."

To that end, religious organizations of all kinds have instituted awards appropriate for Scouts of all ages. While the awards and the requirements for achieving them are administered by those religious organizations (not BSA), the BSA, the Etowah Council and the Northeast Georgia District encourage each Scout to pursue the religious award of his faith.

To learn more about earning your church's religious emblem, speak to your unit leader and or contact Mr. Hawkins at religious@etowah-bsa.org or directly at one of Roundtable meetings.  Also, your pastor or youth minister may be able to give you some direction in your pursuit.

Coming soon:

We would like to create a list of local clergy who are aware of the religious awards programs for Scouts of their faith and are willing to shepherd young men through the requirements to earn the awards. If you know of someone who you would like added to such a list, please provide their contact information (email, phone, etc…) to Mr. Hawkins at religious@etowah-bsa.org. He will follow up with them, and if appropriate, add them to the list. We hope this will soon grow to be a useful resource for Scouts seeking guidance from local leaders in their own faith group, who can assist them in this important endeavor.
